Shirley Welten is a visual artist specialized in analog photography. She captures scenes she encounters on location. These are still lifes shaped partly by human intervention. It is noteworthy, however, that people are always absent from Welten's photographs. Everything visible in the work is awaiting what is to come, or resting from what has been.

"I view my works as a kind of diary fragments, containing reflections of my experiences and ideas about my daily environment. I revisit these situations during my photographic journeys. The work is right when the feeling of the depicted space and the way everything is positioned come together exactly."

After her studies in Sculpture and Other Media at AKV|St.Joost, Shirley Welten traveled extensively in Eastern Europe, with a residency in Ukraine and Russia. Subsequently, much of her work was created in Italy, but her most recent focus is on Cuba. She works from her studio/darkroom in 's-Hertogenbosch. Welten has exhibited at institutions such as W139 (Amsterdam), Pavillon 333 (Munich), NCCA (St. Petersburg), Willem Twee Fabriek (’s-Hertogenbosch), Museum W (Weert), and SecondHome Projects (Berlin).

In addition, she is affiliated as an Art Mediator with the Rijksakademie (Amsterdam), among others.
