At dusk, a nun in Lalibela walks to one of the ancient rock-hewn churches, where evening prayers begin.
Located in northern Ethiopia, Lalibela is one of the holy sites of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The city is known for its eleven medieval rock-hewn churches, carved from solid rock and connected by narrow corridors and tunnels. For centuries, pilgrims have flocked here to pray and attend liturgies. The place exudes a mystical atmosphere, especially at dusk, when monks, nuns, and believers silently make their way to the churches for evening prayers.
Petterik Wiggers has worked as a photographer and cameraman in Africa for over twenty years. Based in Addis Ababa, he travels throughout the continent for his work.
He divides his time between personal projects and current events, such as the conflict in Somalia, and assignments for international media and organizations. He works on commission for The Economist, Time Magazine, Wired, The New York Times, Guardian, The Financial Times, and Monocle, among others. His work earned him the title of Photojournalist of the Year.
