Paulien Dubelaar (born 1974) explores existential questions in her work, such as: what is the meaning of life and death, how can we live meaningfully, and who are we as human beings? Where answers are not readily available, she nevertheless uses images to explore where they might be found: in grandeur and insignificance, in vulnerability and transience, in stillness and movement, in darkness and light. Existential philosophy inspires her photographic work.
Paulien uses various techniques to print her images, such as photographic etching, zokin gake, and cyanotype. By using these techniques, she adds an extra dimension to the photographs.
