This photo is part of the series Saudade, a Portuguese word that has no exact equivalent in any other language. Saudade is a feeling of longing that can never be fulfilled. It is a bittersweet feeling. Saudade is the love that remains for a person, place, or time that has been lost.
My father died when I was 15. Before his death, he wanted to emigrate to Portugal to write a novel, but he never got there to fulfill his wish. Years later, I went to Portugal in his place to photograph the story that was never written.
Nanouk Prins (born 1976) graduated cum laude from the Photo Academy in June 2021 with the photo book "Empty Forest," which has been selected several times for international festivals. She has exhibited her work in Rome, Amsterdam, Arles, and Paris. The photo book "Saudade" is expected to be published this fall.
