"I am deeply drawn to the idea of anonymity and independence. Moving through the world of my work, I search for invisibility – a state in which I can step aside from myself to notice and capture what others, absorbed in their daily routines, overlook. As in much of my work, I am not concerned with factual representation. Instead, I feel connected to the fluid nature of painting and music. The subjects I photograph remain veiled, yet they reveal an elusive reality – one where the boundary between dream and reality is unstable, and where time itself begins to dissolve.
In my recent work, I weave together physical and digital road trip photography, portraiture, and fragments of old Creative Commons films to construct an initial image. I print this image at a very small scale on ordinary copy paper, allowing the printer’s imperfections in ink distribution to create a peculiar grain, reminiscent of 8mm film. Onto this base I apply pastel and paint, reinforcing the sense of estrangement I wish to evoke. Finally, I make a full-frame reproduction, so that the result becomes a photograph once again.
I continually experiment with new materials and perspectives to create unexpected images. Yet at the core of my practice, I remain true to my original way of seeing – which perhaps can best be described as making tangible the seemingly unreal."
