The Future Is a Memory explores the paradox between time and memory: holding onto the moment while simultaneously losing it irrevocably. In our fleeting existence, we seek stability in others, in places, in objects, and in memories. Yet these are inevitably swept along by the flow of time; everything that is held onto eventually slips away. Memories are fragments, shadows of a reality that no longer exists.
What does it mean that we can only relive the past, but not the future? And what does this say about our understanding of the present, that elusive, fluid moment between disappearing and becoming?
Hester Baars graduated from the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam in 2019. In her photography, she explores themes such as dreams, memories, transience, and nostalgia. Her images possess a dreamy and sometimes elusive atmosphere, in which past and present touch. They invite the viewer to pause and recognize their own memories and feelings. Her work has been exhibited at Museum Hilversum, the Westergasfabriek, Haute Photography, Bethanien Berlin, and the Athens Photo Festival, among others.
