The Future is a Memory explores the paradox between time and memory: clinging to the moment while simultaneously irrevocably losing it. In our fleeting existence, we seek solace in others, in places, in objects, and in memories. Yet these are inexorably swept away by the flow of time; everything held on to eventually slips away. Memories are fragments, shadows of a reality that no longer exists.
What does it mean that we can only evoke the past, but not the future? And what does this say about our understanding of the present, that elusive, fluid moment between disappearance and becoming?
The tension reveals itself as a constant movement between extremes: between light and dark, truth and appearance, holding on and letting go, past and future.
Hester Baars graduated from the Amsterdam Photo Academy in 2019. In her photography, she explores themes such as dreams, memories, transience, and nostalgia. Her images have a dreamy and sometimes elusive quality, where past and present intertwine. They invite the viewer to pause and recognize their own memories and feelings.
