This photo was taken in the early morning of January 24, 2016, on the beach of Bergen aan Zee at the start of the Egmond Walking Marathon against Rheumatism.
 
Bert Spiertz (1953) has been a documentary and journalistic photographer since the 1980s. He shows a fondness for travel and photographing in countries that have been in the news for one reason or another. In doing so, he seeks a broader perspective than just the purely newsworthy.
 
In his more recent work, he demonstrates his interest in coastal areas. Where the land meets the sea, a society often reveals its true face. This has resulted in, among other things, photo books and exhibitions about the North Sea coast and the coasts of the Black Sea. The photo offered is from the book Man made Coast (2018, published by Lecturis), in which he presents his own vision of the entire Dutch coast, from Cadzand in Zeeland to Nieuwe Statenzijl in Groningen.
